grusheski: philadelphia was the first american city to develop a water system and to take on as a municipal responsibility water delivery to all of its citizens. when william penn laid out the city, he actually chose a spot of land that had a lot of groundwater. however, by 1730, 30,000 people lived within the first seven blocks of philadelphia, next to the delaware river. well, 30,000 people caused filth in the city and polluted their water sources. the groundwater was not potable. and in one year, 1/6 of the population died of yellow fever. now, they didn't know at the time that yellow fever was carried by mosquitoes. but the health issue was major in that first movement to build a water system. narrator: so they set out to find the cleanest source of water. although the majority of philadelphia's water now comes from the delaware river, early engineers found that development along the waterfront was causing pollution. so their search led them to the nearby schuylkill river. philadelphia developed technologies to pump water from the river into the city. these technologies established engi

our first responders have been doing a heroic job protecting our city and saving lives and they are still fighting fires and con ukt doing life-saving search and rescue migs and we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude. the storm brought something like 23 serious fires to parts of staten island, brooklyn, queens as well as city island in the bronx. the terrible fire on breezy point is now ununder control, but we believe we lost more than 80 houses. the search and recovery operations there are ongoing. if any of you saw the pictures on television is looked look a forest fire out in the midwest. the winds were just deaf statinstatin devastating and blowing from one building to the next one. we are hoping and praying that there was no loss of life in those fires, but even we can -- even if we can save any lives, many people have lost their homes and they have our full support in the days and weeks ahead. the 76 shelters we opened will remain open today and we will continue to keep shelters open until people displaced by the storm can safely return to their homes or find temporary housing. o

the first thing we wanted to see was the boardwalk. we saw all day yesterday the visuals of the boardwalk detaching and floating out into the city. went to the north end of the island. there was a lesser developed part of the boardwalk that disintegrated and detached, and the boardwalk that we all know that is attached to most of the major businesses here in atlantic city is still intact, and can you see we're standing on it right now. throughout our state, even in just the last hour, road lights came back on, so there is some power that is coming back, now, we made our way up to the boardwalk, tried to walk by a bunch of casinos. one where we did see people inside was cesare's, got power back. kelly clarkson was up. spoke to a security guard and they said they hope to open as soon as thursday. still waiting for comment from some of the other casinos, the new big casino and club rebel is towards the end of the boardwalk where there was damage. there were windows coming off a tarp and some damage to the roof. they hope to open very near
